The condominium homes at Bellingham Cohousing are privately-owned,
each with their own kitchens and other features you would expect
in a typical residence. In addition, Cohousing includes many common
facilities that offer cost-saving resource-sharing, along with areas
that promote and support community interactions. The shared facilities
at Bellingham Cohousing include:
- Our Common
House with a large common dining room, a community kitchen, several
sitting areas, meeting rooms, and dedicated areas for children
- A Workshop
equipped for wood and metalworking, and with areas for ski tuning
and bike maintenance
- A community
room above the workshop
- A playfield
just south of the Common House with a swing set and monkey bars
- A community
hot tub is available for use on the west side of the property
- A community
vegetable garden is just north of the hot tub on the west side
of the property.

As part of the
purchase process we strongly recommend that potential buyers do
ample research about Cohousing
and Bellingham Cohousing in particular. Making a move from conventional
housing to Cohousing can be a BIG decision and we want you to be
fully informed before you join us. Research that has been helpful
to people in the past includes attending general and committee meetings,
joining us for at least one common meal, and individually meeting
with potential Cohousing neighbors.
The Bellingham
Cohousing neighborhood infrastructure and individual homes were
designed by The
Cohousing Company in collaboration with some of the original
residents. We incorporated as many eco-friendly materials and design
features as we could. These include marmoleum flooring, the Common
House trim lumber, and radiant baseboard heating. Many of the construction
materials including glues, solvents, surface finishes, structural
and decorative materials are low-toxic. We upgraded a number of
design features and construction materials, including acoustic insulation
between adjacent units, better grades of cabinetry, and Ethernet
wiring for the community computer network and Internet access.
Condominium
fees are based on unit size and are determined during a community-wide
end-of-year budgeting process. Bellingham Cohousing operates under
the air-space condominium regulations of Washington State.
